Are tattoos popular where you are?
I know they have been around forever — particularly in different cultures — but they have become wildly popular here in recent years. There was a time when only a certain sector of the population would get them — at least according to the then predominant stereotype and belief. Now, it is really in vogue across all socio-economic groups and with both men and women.
There are TV shows in the US which detail the lives of the tattoo artists, their shops and their work. Others show competitions for cash prizes and features in magazines and publications.
I really love some of the artwork. I, personally, just don’t want it on my body forever. Others don’t mind the idea, and that’s just fine. Each to his own.
Do you have any? What are they of?

I have a small tattoo in my ankle (on?). It is a butterfly. I made it about fifteen years ago because some friends convinced me to do it and this tattoo was very popular at that time. I don’t like tattoos but, like you, I think that some tattoos are real pieces of art and I respect people who decide to have them.
I hope that what I have written can be understood, sorry for this bad English.

I haven’t got any tattoos. In Australia they were very popular when I was living there and once my boss, a tattoo lover, gave me a closed envelope for my birthday. I thought it was the usual birthday card but it was a tattoo gift voucher. I thanked him and gave it back to him.
Some men I met there seemed to be addicted to tattoos. No matter how many they had, they always seemed to want more and more. My colleague’s boyfriend was covered in tattoos from head to toe. I don’t find this attractive at all. I think that now in Spain tattoo removals are even more popular than tattoos themselves.
Y ahora un poquito en español. Muchos adolescentes estarían encantados de tatuarse por el simple sentimiento de ir en contra de lo establecido y probar cosas nuevas. Recuerdo que una vez en una comida familiar le pregunté al hijo de mi prima si le gustaban los tatuajes y si le gustaría tatuarse algo. El chaval no dudó un momento en afirmar que sí. Su padre estaba al quite y no tardó un segundo en soltarle irónicamente que si quería un tatuaje, él mismo le podía pintar algo donde quisiera —es pintor de brocha gorda—.
De esas veces en las que una está más guapa calladita.

I don’t have any in my body either. In Chile they were considered to be only for delinquents etc…. then I came to the U.S. and sometime early 80’s some little starts, self-adhesive stickers, began to be promoted for girls to be worn on their faces on their birthday, and later to be put on popular toys, and so on. I told my wife at that time, that I didn’t like that because it was conditioning people to think of tattoos as something ordinary and that everybody would want that, by first instilling it to parents as something fun for kids. I remember that even at that time, the U.S., Mexican-Americans would have a tear falling down from one of their eyes put on to signify they had been in jail…
In any event, I wasn’t mistaken about tattoos becoming popular.

It looks like we’re quite a conservative gang here, because I, too, am amazed at how people engrave something permanent on their body.
Yes, Gerardo, tattooos are very popular here in Spain now, though maybe they haven’t reached the extreme you mention.
I’m not against tattoos in themselves and I think it’s nice that they have become disassociated from those stereotypes and «sectors of the population» that you mention and we all understand.
Monic has a little butterfly on her ankle and I know several people who have exactly the same, or a ladybird or a flower or a mini-heart in the same place or on their shoulderblade. I must say that I find them attractive, but no more than a bit of jewellery that can be taken off whenever you want.
I also have a couple of (much younger) female acquaintances who, at the same time and last year, had big tattoos done all over their upper arm. In both cases the images were very tasteful and artistic. They also represented the essence of those persons. The violinist had a treble clef and the «country girl» and oenologist had a vine. They were both done only in black ink and if I’d seen them on a canvass, I’d have thought they were real works of art.
But here comes the «but». Many of those images look fantastic on young, terse skin, but they’re not going to look the same in 15, 20, 30 years time. Blasita mentions removal, which is an option nowadays, but it’s not easy, totally efficient or comfortable .
I have to admit that my opinion is not very objective. Nowadays, I won’t even use a permanent colour on my hair due to a bad experience in my more adventurous youth!
But don’t take much notice of me.
¡Gracias por tus palabras de ánimo, Gerardo! Sí que es más difícil expresarse en un idioma que no es el tuyo a entenderlo. Para mí el inglés es un universo desconocido porque los chicos de ahora sí han tenido contacto con él desde pequeños, pero los de mi generación no. Lo necesito sobre todo para el trabajo y me está costando algo.
Blasita, esas anécdotas son geniales. ¿Qué cara puso tu jefe después de que rechazaras ese gift voucher?

Pues realmente no le importó, Monic. Mi jefe lo hizo con su mejor intención y se lo agradecí mucho. Él mismo tenía algunos tatuajes, como muchos australianos entonces —no sé ahora, pero por mis contactos sé que la situación tampoco ha cambiado demasiado—, y pensó que me animaría a hacerlo al ser un regalo. No fue así, pero lo genial es que siempre nos echábamos unas risas al recordar ese momento. Este jefe era una persona muy maja y muy abierta.
He visto que una gran parte de los que quieren quitarse tatuajes suelen ser personas que se tatúan el nombre de su amado(a) o algo relacionado con él y, cuando pasa lo que pasa, quieren deshacerse de esta clara y permanente declaración de amor. Estoy de acuerdo con Nibbles en que quitarse tatuajes es problemático, pero ¿qué es peor: arriesgarse a tener algún efecto secundario o a que no desaparezca todo el tatuaje, o seguir llevando el nombre de uno al que ahora se «odia»? Los que deciden intentar quitárselo parece que lo tienen muy claro.
Escribo también es español para animar a que otros compañeros den su opinión en este idioma. Estoy segura de que a Gerardo le encantaría oír otras experiencias y opiniones.

Pues sí, no deja de ser un fenómeno de moda que está ahora en su apogeo, promovido por todos aquellos que obtienen beneficio de su implantación. Antes, fueron los pírsines y pasaron. Y antes, el pelo largo y pasó. Y más antes todavía, los vaqueros de pata de elefante y también pasaron. Y los tatuajes pasarán sustituidos por otro fenómeno con el que se identificarán como forma de rebeldía las generaciones que están ahí desplumando. A mí me tocó «pelearme» con los pirsines, prometiéndole al lordito que si se le ocurría ponerse uno en la oreja yo me pondría otro como los que usaba Matilde Coral a juego con sus batas de cola. Naturalmente, la amenaza fue inútil. El aludido perpetró con alevosía su fechoría y tal como se lo puso se lo quitó meses después. Suele ocurrir.
Pero estos que se pintarrajean la piel (no un dibujito, no un simbolito, no; el brazo entero o media espalda) nunca se acuerdan cuando están en el potro de tortura que se tienen que quedar con eso para siempre. Los mismos que ni muertos se quedarían toda la vida con el mismo coche o el mismo móvil. Suele ocurrir.
